FAQ
Is porcelain tile better?
Porcelain tile is a very high density product, fired at high temperatures and has superior durability and a low water absorption rate. The glazes on porcelain tile are known for a higher range of color variation, giving a rich custom look.
What is a through body porcelain tile
Through body porcelain tile is when the same color on the top goes all the way through. Even in extreme applications, these tiles tend not to show wear as the porcelain is quite durable (harder than granite) and the color goes all the way through. It can be used on exterior and interior floors and walls. It’s a great product for high traffic areas.
What is the porosity of a tile?
The porosity of a ceramic tile or a porcelain tile is the water absorption of the material. When choosing a tile, pay attention to the ratings that measure the percentage of water absorbed (porosity). The classifications for the porosity of tile are: impervious (least absorbent), vitreous, semi-vitreous and non-vitreous (most absorbent). Porous tile should not be used outdoors where cold weather produces freeze/thaw cycles.
Is it OK to use floor tiles on walls?
Yes, you can use floor tiles on walls. Exterior applications require special precautions and installation methods. Please check with your installer or product manufacturer for application recommendations.
What is Non-Slip ?
“Non-Slip” is something of a misnomer when it comes to describing a tile. Put simply, no tile can be guaranteed to be slip-proof. We use a slip rating system known as R-Ratings, with the results of any particular tile ranging between R-9 and R-13. A higher rating indicates a more slip-resistant tile. There’s no applicable building regulation at the moment for slip-resistance. Tiles with any given “R” rating do not have to be used in any particular area, but the higher ones, in particular R-11 and higher, are definitely recommended for disabled-access bathrooms and public areas. Often, an architect will nominate a minimum rating if he or she is detailing the specification on a project
What Does “Unglazed” Mean?
Tiles are made of clay which have been fired in a kiln. If glaze is to be applied, it's done before the tile enters the kiln. The glaze then fuses to the top surface of the clay body of the tile during the firing process. In the event that no glaze had been applied, the resultant tile is deemed to be “unglazed”. This is the simple difference between glazed and unglazed tiles. Unglazed Ceramic and porcelain tiles gain their color from mineral deposits that were present in the clay from which the tiles were composed, or by the addition of natural pigments. These pressed pigments can be designed to form a pattern, and the patterns run right down through the tile (a “full body porcelain tile”), as opposed to just being a design on the surface of the tile. This gives unglazed tiles an earthy, natural appearance. As unglazed tiles have no liquid glass protective coating, they will absorb liquid, which will lead to staining. Thus it’s necessary to apply a protective sealant to unglazed tiles, which will require re-c
What does glaze mean?
Many people assume the word “glazed” means shiny or glossy. However, in the tile industry, the word is used to refer to the coat of enamel or liquid glass that is applied to almost all ceramic and porcelain tiles. Glaze is a substance, rather than a description. Most tiles are glazed. The glaze can be a matt or glossy finish. There are many tiles that are available in both finishes - plain white tiles, for example. They'd be described as either matt white tiles or glossy white tiles, with both of them being glazed.
